Reading in 5th Grade TAG

Picture
By providing a variety of reading experiences with diverse material, we hope to foster a love of reading.  Students in the 5th grade take a Reading SOL test in May to determine their proficiency with the skills described on this page.  In preparation, students will participate in a Home Reading Program, Accelerated Reader, Renzulli Learning, as well as daily classroom activities and instruction.  All students are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes at home DAILY.

Reading at a Glance...

5th Grade TAG reading will be comprised of vocabulary instruction using the Wordly Wise Program, Word Study (looking at the discreet parts of a word to discover meaning and patterns), and comprehension of fiction and non-fiction in the form of anthologies, novels, and incorporated content text and supplemental reading.  Independent reading is encouraged and required with the Home Reading and Accelerated Reader programs which enable students to track individual progress toward reading goals.
